Hang On for March 2025’s Community Challenge!

The March SHIRO! Monthly Community Challenge will need you to hang on tight!!! It’s time to once again bust out those Racing Controllers because this polygonal take on the classic arcade motorcycle racer demands perfection! Wear some knee pads as we are playing SEGA Sports Hang-On GP!
— Gregori Rasputin

Developed by Genki and published by SEGA in 1995, Hang-On GP would end up being the final game in the Hang-On series. It’s by far one the best games developed with Saturn’s Arcade Racer wheel in mind, while also being pretty terrible on standard D-pad. An unsung Saturn exclusive revving on the starting line waiting to cut loose.

Hear the angry screams of the bikes around you and the roar of the crowd. Now is the time to give it all you’ve got and go for the glory of the first place! Only you will reach the finish line first, nobody can stand in your way!
— JP disc lyrics

This month we will be playing the six GP courses, NTSC only. The initial three courses will last all month, and the final three will be weekly challenges starting with Long Albatross Cliff Reef on March 8. There will be a special prize for the “Leader of the Pack” awarded to whoever gets the fastest total time of all six courses by the end of the month.

Also being introduced is the Emulation Category. The Any Way You Can” prize will be awarded for the fastest total time of the initial three courses. This will only be available to participants who don’t own real Saturn hardware (so no double-dipping). Any emulator is allowed, including MiSTer.

RULES:

Available All Month:

  • Chick Magnet — Best time on GP race on Albatross Cliff Reef
  • Sentry — Best time on GP race on Great Crimson Wall
  • Express Lane — Best time on GP race on New Dwells

Weekly Challenges:

  • Wheelie Big Bird — Best time on GP race on Long Albatross Cliff Reef (March 8 to 14)
  • Castle Park — Best time on GP race on North Crimson Wing (March 15 to 21)
  • Totally not NYC — Best time on GP race on Long New Dwells (March 22 to 28)

Special Prize:

  • Leader of the Pack — Best time on GP race for all six tracks combined

Emulation (any emulator, all month long):

  • Any Way You Can — Best time on GP race for the first three tracks combined
NOTE: This category is only for participants who don’t own real Saturn hardware. Also no double-dipping!

Shout-outs again to everyone involved who put this all together: Gregori Rasputin for leading, typing up all the rules and creating the flyer; SEGARPGFAN for putting together the Google form for submissions; SaturnDave for the custom patch design; Moose for making the patch prizes; Random for the music on the sizzle video (put together by yours truly Double Dime); and Danthrax for decision-making and being the voice.

Your whole world narrows down to just three things: timing, traction and centrifugal force. Keep these factors under control, and you’ll have your competition eating your dust. Lose control and you’ll wind up pinwheeling against the wall in a spectacular, time-eating crash.
