City Connection will release Farland Saga 1 and 2 in their Saturn Tribute line June 26, the publisher announced Tuesday.
On the official website, City Connection says the titles will be available on Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and PC via Steam for just under 3,000 yen, which is about US$20. It uploaded a short announcement trailer to YouTube, too.
The Steam pages for Farland Saga 1 and Farland Saga 2 say that both games will feature a new “Always-On Status Display” for allies, allowing you to grasp the battle situation instantly; a support function to double experience points gained; and the usual rewind, quick save and quick load functions that all Saturn Tribute games have.
Farland Saga 1 and 2 were released on the Saturn in Japan in January and December, respectively, 1998. They’re strategy game followups to the long-running Farland Story series of RPGs. They were developed and published by TGL, which still exists today under the name Entergram.
Last month, City Connection announced Saturn Tribute releases for two more games originally published by TGL on the Saturn: Steam Heart’s (sic) and Advanced V.G. — the V.G. stands for Variable Geo — which are a vertical shoot-em-up and a 2D fighting game, respectively. Those titles are set to release May 29 in Japan on the Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC via Steam, according to the official website.
The publisher mentioned the Farland Saga Saturn Tribute titles at the time, too, but gave few other details until this week.
New Steam pages for Steam Heart’s and Advanced V.G. revealed more details about those games’ Saturn Tribute-specific added features.

Steam Heart’s will have a “guide display” for item lists on the side of the screen; a “carry-over weapon system” that allows players to keep their weapons after clearing stages; and an “extra durability boost” for the player character. Advanced V.G. will have a command list guide displayed on the side of the screen and a “one-button Super Move system” that will allow for automatic input of complex commands. Both games will have rewind, quick save and quick load functions as well.

Sadly, it seems that no new English translations are planned for any of the upcoming slate of Saturn Tribute titles, unlike last year’s Assault Suit Leynos 2. While Steam Heart’s and Advanced V.G. have some English in them already and generally can be enjoyed without knowing Japanese, the Farland Saga games are full of Japanese and likely would be impenetrable to those who can’t read that language.
It remains to be seen if any of these games will be released on consoles in the West, but in the very least, they’ll be on Steam for those curious about trying them. Physical copies of all of them are planned for Japan on the Switch and PlayStation 5.
Saturn Tribute games are the Saturn originals running on what City Connection calls the Zebra Engine, which dataminers have found appears to be a modified version of the SSF emulator. City Connection uses the “S-Tribute” label for the Saturn games that are only released digitally, while games like Cotton 2 and Suchie-Pie have gotten physical printings — at least in Japan — so they sport the “Saturn Tribute” label. The publisher uses a “Saturn Tribute Boosted” label to denote extra features that aren’t in their other Saturn efforts.
That emulator gives players features like rewind, quick save and quick load.
So far, 17 games have been released under the three labels: Cotton 2, Cotton Boomerang and Guardian Force, which came out in 2021; Layer Section & Galactic Attack, Cleopatra Fortune, Elevator Action Returns and the four games in the Suchie-Pai collection, which came out 2022; Metal Black, Bust-a-Move 2: Arcade Edition & Bust-a-Move 3 and Batsugun, which came out in 2023; and Assault Suit Leynos 2, Wolf Fang and Skull Fang last year.
Oh wow! City Connection, aka trash. Wish they’d stop dragging the Saturn thorough the mud with this crap already…
