House of the Dead 2 Remake Demo Hits Steam

A demo for The House of the Dead 2 Remake went up on Steam today, giving PC players a glimpse at what’s in store when publisher Forever Entertainment releases the full game this spring.

The demo, developed by Forever Entertainment subsidiary MegaPixel Studios, allows a single player or two players co-operatively to try out the game’s first level.

Although Forever Entertainment announced their intentions to remake House of the Dead 2 several years ago, they made a new announcement last month with more specifics, including its release time frame of this spring as well as the platforms it will be on — the Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, and the PC via Steam and GOG.

The demo was released as part of Steam’s Next Fest February event, which runs until March 3. It’s unclear if the demo will become unavailable after that day.

According to the Steam page, the remaster will feature the following:

  • Remastered music (with the classic soundtrack also available in the game)
  • Modern graphics
  • Gameplay faithful to the original game
  • Co-op mode
  • Multiple endings and branching levels
  • Classic Campaign: Almost two years after the events of the first installment, AMS agents James Taylor and Gary Stewart are deployed to investigate a city seized by undead creatures.
  • Boss Mode: Take on the challenge of defeating the game’s bosses as fast as you can.
  • Training Mode: Polish your skills in several available training scenarios to improve your abilities before deploying on a mission.

The remake also has new voice acting — to the chagrin of those who are fans of the original game’s cheesy performances.

That voice acting is only English, although the page does list subtitles in a variety of languages, including French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese and traditional Chinese.

The Steam page lists these minimum system requirements:

  • OS: Windows 10
  • Processor: Intel i5 3570K / AMD RYZEN 3 3300X
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: DESKTOP GTX 1050ti / 1650 / AMD Radeon RX 570
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Storage: 7 GB available space

And these are the recommended system requirements:

  • OS: Windows 10
  • Processor: intel i7-7700 / AMD RYZEN 5 5600X
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 1070 / 1660 super / AMD Radeon RX Vega 56
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Storage: 7 GB available space

Sega made The House of the Dead 2 for arcades in 1998 and ported it to the Dreamcast the following year. It later saw releases on thhe PC in 2001 and the Wii in 2008. Its prequel, a 1996 arcade game, was ported to the Saturn in 1998.

MegaPixel and Forever Entertainment remade the first House of the Dead in 2022 for modern platforms after it did the same for Panzer Dragoon in 2020. They announced their intention to remake Panzer Dragoon II Zwei as well, but they’ve been quiet on that project for years.
