A new version of Kronos released over the holidays, but it could be its last after its main developer said he’s deprioritizing work on the Saturn emulator.
Kronos 2.7 was made public Dec. 31 in a SegaXtreme thread posted by its tester, Benjamin Siskoo. It can be downloaded for 64-bit operating systems and 32-bit ones from Tradu-France. The new version features support for games not playable in earlier versions including Aqua World, Gotha, Mega Man 8, Roommate: Ryouko in Summer Vacation and Senken Kigyouden. It also fixes graphics in games like Doom, Grandia, Virtua Cop 2 and more.
The improvements were shown off in a video from the development team:
Kronos is a fork of the Yabause emulator that has been in development since at least early 2018. Its last update, version 2.6.2, was in September.
But just last week in the Kronos Discord server the emulator’s developer, FCare, said he’s moved on to other projects and isn’t sure if he’ll be back to Kronos in months, years or ever again.
“I am currently lowering a lot the priority of Kronos in the list of my open projects,” FCare said Jan. 20. “Hopefully, a new developer with more time will continue to maintain and fix the project more actively.”
He said that he’d requested help from other developers for years but instead he’s only gotten requests for new features.
“So do not wait for someone to implement your wishes, if you are a developer, try and propose solutions, otherwise just cross your fingers,” he said.
Anyone interested in helping to develop Kronos can take a peek at its GitHub, join the Kronos Discord or post on the Tradu-France forum.
