Dezaemon 2 #BestOfSaturn

A late 1997 release, Athena’s Dezaemon 2 is a shmup-builder. Although it features some pre-built levels, the game’s focus is to allow players to put together the shmup of their dreams (or nightmares) and then unleash them on their friends (or frenemies).

Create either top-down or side-scrolling levels, string your levels together, make a pretty title screen… and then save your game to a floppy disk and trade with your friends!

Some very legendary shmups were homegrown using Dezaemon 2, and collections can still be downloaded today. Considering how important the shmups are to the Saturn’s library, this game is brilliant.
