Under the Microscope: Hang-On GP

The earliest references to cheat codes for Hang-On GP1 that I found were in the 1996-02 issue of Computer and Videos Games Magazine. They knew about two of them:

Codes also appeared in various places on the Internet, but inconsistently. SegaSages.com only had one of them as of 1997. GameFAQs still doesn’t have either of them in 2024. ConsoleDatabase.com has them both, plus a bunch that seem to actually be for Manx TT Super Bike.

What’s the definitive list? I decided to investigate. I found some new ones! Below are the details.

Auto demo codes

Enter these codes during the auto demo that plays after the title screen times out. One of these seems to be listed on Japanese sites, but I think the other three are new!

Unlock the special machine

You can unlock the extra bike the hard way by finishing the game and then finishing a lap on any course in under 29 seconds. Or you can put in this code:

X, A, X, Z, C, A, C, Y, B, Down

The special machine has maximum stats in all areas.

Left: the auto demo screen. Right: the special machine, unlocked.

The NTSC-U version of the game listens for this sequence with the function at 06013206.

Unlock Endurance mode

Endurance mode is normally unlocked by getting first place for all six tracks in GP Race mode. But you can unlock it with this code, too:

Up, Down, Right, Left, X+Y+Z

You really have to nail the timing of the three buttons at the end. This code seems to have been known to parts of the Japanese Internet.

The NTSC-U version of the game listens for this sequence with the function at 060134f0.

Unlock mirrored courses

You can unlock mirrored courses by finishing all six tracks in Endurance mode. This code provides a shortcut method:

X, A, X, B, Z, C, Up, Down

Mirrored courses can then be selected with the Start button in Time Trial mode.

Left: the second course in its normal orientation. Right: the second course, mirrored.

The NTSC-U version of the game listens for this sequence with the function at 060132f4.

Mark all races complete

This code marks you as having finished the first course in GP Race mode in 3rd place and the rest of the courses in 1st place:

X, B, Z, A, Y, C, Up, Down, Up, Down

I guess this makes it easier to unlock the other stuff?

The NTSC-U version of the game listens for this sequence with the function at 060133da.

Mode Select codes

Enter these codes on the Mode Select screen. Two of them match the descriptions in the Computer and Video Games page shown above. The third one is new!

Unlock all tracks

The old magazines had this one right. Open the Options screen and then exit it. On the Mode Select screen, enter:

R, R, L, R, R

The NTSC-U version of the game listens for this sequence with the function at 0601797c.

Unlimited time in Time Trial mode

The old magazines nailed this one, too. On the mode select screen, highlight Time Trial and then enter:

Right, Left, Up, Down, Z

Now in Time Trial mode, you’ll see FREE under TIME.

The NTSC-U version of the game listens for this sequence with the function at 06017a5c.

Unlock 10 bikes (NTSC-J version)

This one puzzled me. On the NTSC-U version of the game, you can only successfully enter it if the value at address 0604cc94 is less than 10. But the game sets it to exactly 10 at startup! It turns out that all 10 normal bikes are available from the start in the NTSC-U version. In the NTSC-J version, you have to unlock them.

Open the Options screen and then exit it. On the Mode Select screen, enter:

Y (10 times), B (1 time)

The NTSC-J version of the game listens for this sequence with the function at 0601761c.
