X-Men Arcade on SEGA Saturn Gets a Major Update with Version 0.4

Hello again, SEGA fans, it’s James the SEGAHolic of the SEGAGuys here, and we’re back with another Sega Saturn homebrew update.

As followers of the channel will be aware, we’ve been covering the progress of HotRodX’s brilliant port of Konami’s X-Men Arcade game, and just two months on from our last update video, HotRodX has added even more content to the project.

First off, we’ve got a brand new playable character, Dazzler, whose powers include the ability to convert sound into various forms and intensity of light, blinding and even destroying enemies. The inclusion of Dazzler means five out of the six available characters are selectable, with only Colossus remaining unavailable.

We also see tweaks and enhancements across the game, with boulder throwing Sentinels, new enemy vehicles, fire breathing lizard men, and the addition of an entire new stage, the fourth level called Island M Caves. This means we now have 50% of the game playable, with Island M Cave Exterior, Island M Ruins, Asteroid M, and the Battle with Magneto still to come.

It’s brilliant to see this project moving along at such pace, and compared to the initial build, it’s getting closer and closer to replicating the arcade game. The music sounds clearer with added effects, the sound effects are cleaner, and there’s more enemies on screen, more variations of them, and the finer details on each stage just look amazing.

This, along with Final Fight MD, are two homebrew projects I’ve been most excited about this year. I just love 2D sidescrolling beat-em-ups, and thanks again to HotRodX for his continued hard work, keeping in mind he’s building this entirely from the ground up with no source code from the game; what you’re seeing here is entirely his own work.

We’ll have more on this and all the other homebrew projects as we prepare to move into 2025, and we can’t wait to see what our homebrew community has in store for us.
