Yaba Sanshiro for Windows Updated to Version 1.16.3

A new version of the Windows version of Sega Saturn emulator Yaba Sanshiro 2 released yesterday to coincide with the Saturn’s 30th anniversary in Japan.

Developer Shinya “DevMiyax” Miyamoto wrote a blog post announcing version 1.16.3, bringing the Windows version in line with the more frequently updated cell phone editions of the emulator. It can be downloaded from that page.

This is the first update in more than two years for Yaba Sanshiro for Windows — version 1.9.2 came out back in August 2022.

In the blog post, titled “Happy 30th birthday,” Miyamoto waxed nostalgic about the Saturn:

“On November 22, 1994, the Sega Saturn was launched. Equipped with unprecedented multimedia capabilities, it quickly became a playground for game development experimentation, inspiring countless innovations and leading to the creation of many timeless masterpieces. At the heart of it all was a strong passion for embracing new challenges.

To preserve this spirit forever, I have been continuously developing a Sega Saturn emulator. On this 30th anniversary, to once again share this passion with the world, I am releasing the Windows version of YabaSanshiro.”

Updates in version 1.16.3 include:

  • Migrated from Visual Studio 2017 to Visual Studio 2022.
  • Upgraded from Qt5 to Qt6.
  • Added a game browser interface.
  • Revamped SDL input handling to support modern game controllers.
  • Simplified the settings interface.
  • Improved full-screen functionality.
  • Integrated Vulkan window into the main window.
  • Various bug fixes and improvements.

Miyamoto’s focus with Yaba Sanshiro has been on handheld platforms. It’s been available on Android as well as portable PCs running Linux for years, and it finally reached Apple iOS this summer.

Yaba Sanshiro began development in late 2015 as a fork of Yabause, an emulator that is no longer actively worked on, to bring it to Android devices. A PC version was released about a year later, seeing regular updates alongside the Android version.

Its name was changed to Yaba Sanshiro 2 in April 2021 after Google blacklisted the original app for including Action Replay cheats.
