The Saroo is something we’ve kept a keen eye on here at the SEGAGuys, and we waited quite some time before taking the plunge and picking up a couple of cartridges of our own. While browsing AliExpress just under a fortnight ago, a listing for Saroo jumped out at me in the ChoiceDay sale section, and I just had to check them out.
240+ orders, five star seller rating, and plenty of buyer reviews with photos had me intrigued, but the mention of new chips being used plus the addition of beveled edges on the cart itself, made this one hard to resist.
We paid just under £90 for both Saroo’s including tax and 5 day guaranteed shipping and when they arrived late last week, I was impressed by both the build quality and the performance. However, our opinions on Saroo after an extended hands-on aren’t for this article or even this video, and we have a podcast coming soon going into greater detail on our Saroo experience.
When setting up my SD card for Saroo, I found a few videos online but they were a little bloated and I really wanted something that just got to the point, which is what prompted me to make this video. I also wanted to show loading time comparisons with our favourite Sega Saturn ODE option, Fenrir.
This was the one aspect of Saroo that I was most excited to see for myself, having spoken to SaturnDave and Pat about it a few months back, and they weren’t exaggerating. Playing the likes of Virtua Fighter 2 and Last Bronx feels like you’re sitting in front an arcade cabinet, there are virtually no load times between rounds.
I’ve always enjoyed the look of custom backgrounds on Saroo, including the addition of menu music, and this guide talks you through creating and setting both the background and the PCM audio file for menu music. This really does allow you to make your Saroo ‘yours’ and add a touch of individuality to your menu. With Sega Rally being my favourite Saturn game, I opted for Pandemonium’s amazing Sega Rally documentary thumbnail along with the Saturn version of ‘Conditioned Reflex’.
So if you’re looking to pick up a Saroo, and need a set-up guide that’s clear, concise, and to the point … look no further, we’ve got your covered. Stay tuned to the SEGAGuys and SHIRO! channels for more Saroo coverage in future, including any firmware enhancements, additional features, and game compatibility as and when they happen.
See you on the SEGA side.
