CrimeWave #BestOfSaturn

Eidos’ first foray into Saturn development, 1996’s CrimeWave is a vehicular combat game viewed from an overhead perspective. The streets of Mekeo City are overrun with crime and it’s your job to clean it up!

Search the large playfield for enemy cars and gun them down, with new parts of the city map opening up as you defeat criminals. This is easier said than done, however. Touchy controls and a wild, and at times skippy camera, detract from the fun somewhat.

To this day, the game remains a Saturn exclusive, with Arcade Racer and Mission Stick support baked in the Japanese release.

A Saturn fan since the beginning, Peter plays Saturn almost exclusively. For Peter, Saturn represents a moment in time where 2D games were at their best, 3D was just rising, and fascinating gaming 'firsts' were commonplace.  There are very few Saturn games that Peter cannot find some enjoyment in!

  1. I remember thinking how cool when games could actually play with the CG intro visuals at the time.
I can’t remember which version has this issue, but a specific region has weird hiccups, while the other, which I’m betting is the Japanese release, plays much better.

It’s a fan and simple game with almost nothing to offer aside from being an action vehicular game you can shoot enemies until they explode. If this game has an actual ending, I’m not aware of.
