Virtua Cop 2 kicks off our sixth year of the #BestOfSaturn series in style — and introduces our all-new Gold and Silver hashtags! Once a month we will showcase a game that has already been featured in the series, but is worthy of being highlighted as the very best the system has to offer. Accordingly, we will give Silver and Gold games a slightly longer write-up.
Janet Marshall joins Rage and Smarty at the Virtua City PD as they take on three all-new levels of shooting action. Building on the excellent visuals of the first Virtua Cop Saturn conversion, Cop 2 takes it to the next level with more set-pieces, more on-screen action, and more things to shoot. The action includes police car chases, boarding a high-speed train, infiltrating a cruise ship, and of course locating the bad guys’ secret lair. One or two players take control of Virtua City’s finest with either the Stunner / Virtua Gun, or the control pad. Playing with a pad shows an on-screen target, and the shift key can be pressed for faster cursor movement. The game is also compatible with the Saturn mouse!
The game retains the excellent playability of the original and now includes branching paths in every level. There is even an option to switch to Virtua Cop 1 mode and its addicting progressive scoring system! Released in the first half of 1996, it is perhaps the very best gun game from the generation, and undoubtedly one of the system’s very best games, period.
