Söldnerschild #BestOfSaturn

Söldnerschild’s Ayami Kojima cover art gives strong Symphony of the Night vibes, but this SEGA and Koei collaboration is nothing the like. A strategy game set in medieval Europe that has shades of Dragon Force, it was released in the last quarter of 1997 exclusively in Japan.

After some overworld scenes and extensive administrative menus, the player deploys battalions against those of the enemy on a grid pattern. Get close to an enemy battalion and battle ensues!

A behind-the-player overhead view shows the clash, with generals able to change strategy on the fly, cast spells, and so on. In Koei tradition, campaigns can be very long, though individual battles can be simulated. The language barrier is strong, but the presentation here is slick.

Peter Malek

A Saturn fan since the beginning, Peter plays Saturn almost exclusively. For Peter, Saturn represents a moment in time where 2D games were at their best, 3D was just rising, and fascinating gaming 'firsts' were commonplace.  There are very few Saturn games that Peter cannot find some enjoyment in!

  1. From what I remember, this game was to be a Saturn exclusive until Koei broke the deal and released an updated version on the PS1 a year later.
