Saturn gameplay got a bit prettier for users of RetroTINK 4K video upscaler last month thanks to new firmware that automatically detects the resolution that games output.
On Feb. 2, RetroTINK creator Mike Chi announced on social media that a new update was available that, among other things, added auto-sampling support for the Sega Saturn.
The latest firmware can be found on RetroTINK’s Github. After installing it, download the Saturn profiles from Wobbling Pixels’ Google Drive. They work for both NTSC and PAL gamers.
Chi credited Wobbling Pixels with help on making the Saturn auto-sampling update a reality. Wobbling Pixels made a YouTube video that shows off their work and gives a tutorial on installing and using the profiles.
In the video, Wobbling Pixels explained that of the three profiles, the “Main” one covers the most common resolutions that games output. They estimate that 90 percent of the North American NTSC and PAL library will work with it, and the majority of the Japanese library likely does as well. Wobbling Pixels recommends Main as users’ first choice.
Meanwhile, the “Secondary” profile covers some of the Main profile’s resolutions as well as 352x480i and 704x240p, which are higher resolutions that a few popular games like Virtua Fighter Remix and Die Hard Arcade use.
Lastly, the “Tertiary” profile covers games outputting in 640 resolution only. True Pinball and 3D Baseball are two such games.
Wobbling Pixels specified that the new Sega Saturn profiles are not compatible with older RetroTINK 4K firmware versions.
