Slave Zero X, a brand new retro inspired side scroller is set to drop next week, February 21st on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
For those of you unaware, Slave Zero originally released for PC and Dreamcast on November of 1999 by Infogrames. The game has you piloting a giant mech called a Slave, which was taken over by the resistance group called The Guardians, and having one of their member’s minds downloaded into it. Your objective is to rampage through the city fighting other Slave units, and take down the overlord Lu Chen.
While the Dreamcast version had a lot of faults (Being there is no music whatsoever and having performance issues), it was still a solid release, but unfortunately didn’t seem to do well enough to justify a sequel, and fell into relative obscurity.
Years later, American video game publisher Tommo picked up the rights to Slave Zero, and re-released the game after years of inaccessibility on GOG.
Slave Zero X’s story takes place five years before the events of the original Slave Zero. You play as a Guardian assassin tasked with killing Lu Chen, and saving the world from his rule.
The gameplay harkens back to the 2.5D fighters of it’s day, sporting a mixture of beautiful sprite art, and 32-bit 3D backdrops. Taking inspiration from various Capcom games such as Marvel Vs. Capcom, Alien Vs. Predator, and even Stryder.
On top of a brand new game in the series, Poppy Works and Ironwood Software developed ANOTHER game which is a prequel to Slave Zero X, called Slave Zero X: Episode Enyo. This is a short six episode FREE Quake Remastered mod that tells the tale from Slave Zero X’s main antagonist, the assassin Enyo, who is tasked with killing the Sovereign Khan.
If you are a fan of Slave Zero, or just a fan of futuristic Cyberpunk games, Slave Zero X will be right up your alley.
