Valhollian hit the Saturn in 1998 courtesy of Datt Japan. A strategy RPG game in the vein of Shining Force III, you take the role of Rey Brightforce and fight to end the ancient conflict between the Lafalue and Balt empires.

Brutally unforgiving, the game’s solid 3D action sequences complement the lush 2D art. Valhollian plays like a typical SRPG with the gimmick being that each and every attack produces an automatic counterattack, which changes the strategy quite a bit. “Combo attacks” can be executed, where two characters team up against a single foe.

No in-town exploration here — this is straight SRPG battles. Love SRPGs? Give this recently translated title a try, though prepare to climb a huge difficulty curve.
