News Roundup for the Week of March 13

Here’s a look at some of the recent stories of interest to Saturn fans:

Gungriffon Type 12 model kit announced

Game Arts, the developers of Saturn mech shooter Gungriffon, announced March 10 that a new 1/72 scale model of the game’s Type 12 armored walking vehicle is coming soon from Manten Kobo via Rakuten’s Japanese website.

The model reproduces the cockpit interior, pilot and full armament. It features flexible joints that allow you to pose it.

Manten Kobo is a retailer that specializes in model kits that’s based in Kanagawa, Japan. It accepts international orders that ship via EMS.

The shop already sells Gungriffon models, like the Jagdpanther 2 from Gungriffon II, the sequel that stayed Japan-exclusive but for which an English translation patch has been partially finished.

This appears to be a different Gungriffon model than the one announced by Plum in January.

New patch for Radiant Silvergun on Switch

LiveWire, the publisher of Radiant Silvergun’s Nintendo Switch port, announced a patch on March 8 updating the shmup to version 1.0.5.

In a blog entry, LiveWire said the patch fixes various bugs.

It reads, via machine translation:

“Since the release of Ver.1.0.4, we have confirmed a new problem that causes replay data differences, so we have addressed this.

This fix includes a fix for logic during gameplay. Therefore, there will be a difference in score calculation between ver.1.0.4 and earlier and ver.1.0.5 or later. Therefore, as a response to this, in addition to the date and time of creation, “v1” is displayed for replay data before ver.0.4.2, and “v1″ is displayed for replay data after ver.0.5.3.”

The last patch for Radiant Silvergun came in December to bring the graphics more in line with the Saturn original and fix other bugs.

Final episode of Uncle From Another World airs in Japan

The final episode of Uncle From Another World finally aired March 8 in Japan after months of delays.

The anime featuring a bevy of loving references to Sega — and the Saturn in particular — began airing in July last year with an expected end date to its first season of late September. But just four episodes into its 13-episode run, animation studio AtelierPontdarc announced delays because much of its staff contracted COVID-19.

While it returned for three more episodes in August, the anime was delayed again until late November when five more episodes aired through Dec. 22. A nearly 11-week delay then ensued before the final episode aired earlier this month.

But that’s for Japanese audiences. U.S. viewers had been enjoying episodes with English subtitles on Netflix a couple weeks after their Japanese airings for the first seven episodes. Then after production stopped between August and November, Netflix didn’t resume its two-weeks-later upload schedule.

With the final six episodes of “Uncle From Another World” out in Japan, Netflix in the U.S. has remained radio silent on when they’ll be subtitled and streamed for English-speaking audiences.
