Saturn’s ‘Silver Lining’..?

In late 1995, the North American versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and SEGA Rally Championship hit retail in special silver foil packaging. No other titles would receive this treatment.

While folks have long speculated as to why only these 2 games received such special treatment, almost everyone can agree that they are well deserving of it, being arguably AM2’s & AM3’s best showings on the console.

With consoles like the SNES already having a a series of re-printed “Greatest Hits” titles, one might think that is what these were for the Saturn, however, they lack any such label or visual distinction aside from the silver foil box arts themselves.

It’s possible that just knowing these titles would serve as proof that Saturn could contend with the likes of Sony’s PlayStation, that SEGA simply wanted them to stand out on the shelves as much as possible.

However, whether or not there was any connection with their projected sales figures, they did indeed go on to sell better than pretty much any other title on the console.

Virtua Fighter 2 Sales

  • Japan – 1.30 million
  • N. America – 0.34 million
  • Europe – 0.26 million
  • Others – 0.03 million
  • Total – 1.93 million

SEGA Rally Championship Sales

  • Japan – 0.77 million
  • N. America – 0.21 million
  • Europe – 0.16 million
  • Others – 0.02 million
  • Total – 1.16 million

If you could pick one more Saturn game to receive this special distinction, what would it be?

Virtua Cop, for completing 1995’s Big Three? Panzer Dragoon II Zwei, the much anticipated follow up to an already stellar launch title? NiGHTS into Dreams.., the Saturn’s triple-A title from Sonic Team? Perhaps a later release? Let us know what YOU think was deserving of such a label?

Nope, these two titles are absolutely the best. I love them all but the polish and smoothness of FPS in Sega Rally is not duplicated and the detail and high res of VF2 is also not duplicated. Granted there are others which could make this arguable, but these two titles are just core Saturn titles. All owners should have them.
