VM2: The Next-Gen MicroSD VMU Indiegogo Launched!

We’ve recently covered the announcement of Chris Diaoglou’s VM2 in a previous article, but now they have launched an Indiegogo campaign to help make this project for the masses!

For those of you not familiar with Chris, they previously worked on the DreamConn, a wireless controller for the Dreamcast, and is taking their knowledge from making the ultimate Dreamcast controller, to making the ultimate Dreamcast VMU.

The VM2 project aims to fix the shortcomings of the original Dreamcast VMU, and not only fix, but expand upon the fixes.

Some of these features include:

  • New monochrome backlit LCD
  • Higher screen resolution
  • Micro-SD storage
  • Internal storage of 128KB (200 blocks)
  • Embedded High-capacity battery
  • Micro-USB connection (for charging & connecting to a PC)
  • Original Audio support
  • DreamEye support
  • Original language support (EN/JP)
  • LCD game images streaming to PC
Example of a few of the upgrades from the original VMU

Due to the nature of Indiegogo, a viable prototype has not yet been developed, so production looks like it will take about a little under a year to begin getting into consumer’s hands:

With shipping logistics, it seems like August 2023 will be the latest people will begin to receive theirs.

There will be two color options as well, the classic sleek white, or a matt black option:

While special edition colors like the original VMU would be cool, I think this is a good start for a Indiegogo campaign.

If you’d like to back the Indiegogo, you can at the link here:

The options for backing range from the cheapest at $115 USD/EUR for one VM2, or three for $320 USD/EUR.

As of this article, the Indiegogo is at $35,303 USD, with a goal of $89,977.

We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this project, and let you know more details once it reaches it’s goal, and starts to get in the hands of consumers!
