Limited Run Games announced this week that they intend to publish physical releases of PowerSlave Exhumed and D — the former being a remake of a Saturn first-person shooter and the latter being a port of a survival horror game that appeared on the Saturn.
Limited Run made the announcement Tuesday during their LRG3 livestream. The company didn’t indicate when the games might go up for preorder let alone ship out, nor how much they might cost.
Thus far, PowerSlave Exhumed has only been available on digital storefronts, including Switch, PSN, Xbox, Steam and GOG.
Limited Run plans to release boxed copies of it for the Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but not the PC.
Of course, D released physically on the 3DO in 1995 and for the Saturn, PlayStation and DOS PCs in 1996, but its modern PC port — which is based on the 3DO version and not the Saturn one — has only been available digitally on Steam and GOG.
D’s physical run is set to be on PC and, surprisingly, the 3DO — likely the first time it’s gotten a repressing since it launched.
Sadly, no Saturn repressing is in the cards, as the security ring on retail Saturn discs continues to hamper such efforts.
Both games were brought to modern platforms by developer Nightdive Studios and intellectual property owner Throwback Entertainment, who have built up a library of dozens of old games that they’ve given new life on Steam and GOG.
Limited Run has produced physical small-batch runs of games that had been exclusive to digital storefronts since 2017, typically making it a point of emphasis that any game’s downloadable content and post-launch updates are included on the disc or cartridge they sell.
So it’s likely that the post-launch update that PowerSlave Exhumed got in March will be included with its Limited Run release.
That update addressed a long list of bugs and added quality-of-life improvements like gyroscopic control and text scrolling for inventory descriptions.
The PC port of D has never been updated.
Limited Run Games also typically releases collector’s editions in addition to standalone copies of games. Those often include everything from soundtrack CDs and art books to tchotchkes like acryllic standees and stickers.
It remains to be seen whether Limited Run will announce such a collector’s edition for either PowerSlave or D.
