Black/Matrix is a story-driven strategy RPG released mid-1998, set in an alternate universe where the forces of Hell successfully defeated the forces of Heaven. Full of Judeo-Christian iconography and themes, the game sees the player control Abel and a selectable companion. The story progresses via SRPG battles depicted in very dark and sometimes gory pixel graphics. The gameplay is nuanced, and some characters can even experience perma-death. Another Japanese exclusive that simply demands translation!
