NEW Saturn Platformer “ZYGO”

With SegaXtreme’s Game Competition right around the corner (celebrating Saturn’s 27th Anniversary), submissions are already starting to trickle in, and one of the first to be submitted for consideration is a completely NEW and original game from a new name in the Saturn homebrew scene, JBeretta!

ZYGO Demo 1 – by JBeretta

ZYGO is a traditional scrolling 2D platformer programmed in C using Johannes Fetz‘s Jo Engine. Beretta’s original hope was to design a completely 3D game, however, due to the initial learning curve (this being a first attempt at programming in C), the decision was made to scale back to something a bit more manageable…

“The aim of the game is to collect gems to unlock levels (only 2 in this demo). After defeating the bosses, you gain the ability to transform into a new creature for a short time (a spider or bat so far…) by collecting powerups. This enables you to climb walls, get through small gaps and fly to reach new areas in the levels.
This is my first attempt to learn C, so the code is a bit of a mess! Basically it needs re-writing, but I haven’t had the time… The sound FX and bosses are just place holders at the moment, and I’ll re-do these when I get a chance…”
– JBeretta

What a great way to learn C language! We at SHIRO! guarantee you that we will be following this project with great interest as it continues to develop! As it is right now.., it stands as a pleasant surprise and a competent entry to the upcoming competition, so we’ll wait and see how it fares against the other submissions in the original game category.
