Announced back in September of 2020 at the Crunchyroll Expo, the series had been in development for around 2-3 years, during the development of Shenmue III. Just the other day however, Adult Swim teased a first look at the series, dropping a 1:14 trailer showcasing some of the animation and voice acting.
From what’s been shown off, the anime seems to be a re-telling of Shenmue I and possibly II, covering events in the Shenmue universe over thirteen episodes. There’s also been speculation that it will be how the rest of the Shenmue story will be told, instead of making games for the remaining story.
Several of the previous voice actors will be returning, along with some new voices as well.
The series will be directed by Chikara Sakurai, who previously worked on One Punch Man, Tokyo Mew Mew, Naruto, A Certain Magical Index, and many other series. Yu Suzuki will act as Executive Producer, overseeing the entire project.
The animation itself will be handled by Telecom Animation Film, behind the animation for several Lupin III anime series, as well as the famous The Castle of Cagliostro Lupin III movie.
Shenmue the Animation will be airing on Adult Swim dubbed in syndication, and streaming on Crunchyroll itself, in both dubbed and sub forms.
We are all around pretty excited to see where this goes, and how the story will hold up to a newer audience since it’s 21 year game run.
