Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Sega Saturn Patch by Paul Met

As of last Sunday, Paul Met of Meduza Team put out a third patch for Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight (Or as it’s commonly known in the west as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night).

This patch will change the following (According to the patch notes):

I. Restoration of translucency of many objects;
II. English translation of some elements;
III. Direct access to the global map;
IV. Finalization of the global map;
V. Restoration of the original proportions of some sprites;
VI. Removing horizontal black bars of the screen;
VII. Skipping videos and dialogues;
VIII. Access to Richter’s alternate costume;
IX. Reduced loading time;
X. Support for 4MB expansion card;

While this does add English elements to the game, it does not do a full translation on the level of KnightOfDragon’s patch. The only English elements changed are listed below:

• English translation of the game name on the title screen and on the screen for loading game saves;
• English translation of pause menu screens;
• English translation of characters’ names in dialogues;

This patch also includes the removal of the menu resolution switch to 480i, which prevents certain upscalers form losing signal whenever you open a menu.

One of my favourite changes however, is the restoration of the original sprite proportions for several elements in the game:

The proportions of Alucard’s HUD have been restored;
• Restoration of proportions of explosion and smoke sprites;
• Restoration of the proportions of the sprites of icons of objects, additional weapons and hearts;
• Restoration of the proportions of the sprites of the window frames, which display information about the
receipt of the item and the names of enemies;
• Restoration of the proportions of sprites of trees, bushes and grass in the background of some locations;
• Restoring the proportions of portraits of characters in dialogues. The character portraits on the hero selection
screen were replaced with alternative portraits from the art catalog on the game CD;

Once we have fully tested out the patch, we’ll let you know all the changes, and what our favourite patch is thus far!

    Wow! This is unexpected but im definitely excited to try it out. I always liked the bigger sprites in the Saturn version, but it should be very interesting to see what changes they made there, along with the correct transparencies. Really looking forward to giving it a go now!

      The patch appears to still be there, but under the Japanese title Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight. Give that a try!

  3. Is there a way to combine this patch with the English translation for the best of both worlds? If I do the English patch first your .bat file creates an empty .bin file. If I do it the other way, the Sega Saturn Patcher crashes.

    Hi, i’m trying it with Mednafen 1.29, the game starts but the joypad (an xbox one joypad) ins’t detected. I have this issue only with this game…do you know how can i solve this issue?thanks
