Progress on the FPGA implementation of Saturn

SHIRO! SHOW Recap

As we’ve reported in the past, Sergey Dvodnenko continues his work on the Saturn FPGA implementation for the MiSTer platform.

Since the last update, it seems like he has slowly been making progress on the CD module. Going from non-booting, to actually launching a game, it’s pretty insane the progress that has been made in such a short time:

Going from a non booting drive:

To loading in data:

To booting up an actual game:

While it may not seem like much at first, this is a massive step in getting a Saturn FPGA core on MiSTer. What seemed like the impossible, is now becoming possible! It’s been said in the past the best we’ll get on MiSTer is PS1, but this could open up massive doors for the FPGA platform.

As of May 2021, this is his progress so far on the core:

While we can’t see yet what a 100% Saturn core will look like, or if it would be possible, Sergey is making the impossible, possible.

Stay tuned on SHIRO! For future updates to this project. It could give the Polymega a run for it’s money.

UPDATE:

Looks like a working demo was posted on srg320’s YouTube, showing Bug! Playing in a (While kinda glitchy) pretty stable framerate:
