As many of you may know, Mega Man: The Wily Wars was originally released in North American in 1994, on the now long defunct SEGA Channel. If you were a state-side Mega Man fan, this meant that the only way to play was to be there, in front of your TV, with a subscription to SEGA Channel back in 1994.
For those of you not in the know, Mega Man: The Wily Wars is a Genesis / Mega Drive release that contains soft remakes of the original Mega Man 1-3 NES classics, along with the new Wily Tower bonus stages. The game’s story sees Dr. Wily go back in time to try and stop Mega Man from ever beating him in the first place.
While the title had a fantastic Japanese showing, it was not widely distributed in the PAL territories. This has caused demand for the game to skyrocket, with copies sometimes commanding over $1000 for said game!
27 years later, Retro-Bit has announced it is partnering with Capcom to produce physical copies of the elusive game in North America, and reprint it in Europe. These Genesis / Mega Drive cartridges will finally bring this SEGA Mega Man treasure to a greater number of western fans and collectors. Although Mega Man: The Wily Wars appeared on 2019’s SEGA Genesis Mini, this will be the first time it appears in physical cartridge form in North America.
The Collector’s Edition includes:
● Blue Bomber cartridge for SEGA Genesis®/Mega Drive
● Improvements made to some gameplay performance
● Double-sided Cartridge Sleeve
● Full-Color Instruction Manual
● Certificate of Authenticity
● Interchangeable Lenticular Cards to display your
favorite Robot Master
● Sticker Book
● Double-Sided Poster
● Collectors Cards selected by fans of Retro-Bit
The price for the Collector’s Edition is approximately $69.99 USD. It’s unknown if a standard edition with just the cartridge and box will be released on launch.
The collection will be available to pre-order from 5/21 until 6/21, so you’ll have around a month to get your hands on it. According to Retro-Bit, the game should be released around August or September of this year.
You can pre-order from:
● Castlemania Games (North America)
● Limited Run Games (North America)
● Dragon Box Shop (Europe)
● Strictly Limited (Europe)
● Spel & Sant (Europe)
We’ll be taking a look at this when it drops later this year, and will let you know all about the release in the next coming months!
A lot of people I hear complaining about it being a package deal, and that the extra items in the bundle are pointless, they just want the game. While I understand that, you mentioned that it is selling for the upward of $1000, so now I feel like whatever the case it’s an excellent deal.
